Xiamen has a monsoon, tropical climate which means that it is warm all year round. The winters are mild, and humidity and heat are highest between May and August. Visit in late September to get a better deal on flights and avoid the school holiday price hike. You can still enjoy the warm and dry weather as well. Chinese New Year is always a colourful festival time in Xiamen, so book your flights around that time to experience it for yourself.
Exquisitely kept gardens, unique islands, and stunning museums are just some of the things that make Xiamen a very desirable place to visit. The Xiamen Shuzhuang Garden, for instance, which is located by the sea and which is flanked with majestic mountains, is the perfect place for a tranquil stroll or a quiet picnic with your travelling companions. When you want the buzz of a crowd, just head down to the beautiful Nanputuo Temple, which is also the biggest temple in the region. The city is home to several quirky art galleries and museums, among them the Piano Museum. This is a perfect way for music lovers to while away an hour or two, and its gorgeous exhibits are sure to delight travellers of all ages. Take a trip down to the Botanical Gardens, too, with their carefully sculpted lakes, gently undulating hills and lovely picnic areas. These gardens are of course especially good during fine autumn days and in the heat of summer, but in the winter they can look very magical in crisp air. If you want to enjoy a great view over the city and its sights, then just climb to the top of Riguang Mountain which is a pleasant and popular walk.
Public buses, private taxis, and hire cars are some of the most popular ways to get around in Xiamen. If you do hire a car, then make sure to take a drive down the Gulang Huandao Road, which is well known for being the most picturesque driving route in the region, and which is often hailed as a key attraction in its own right. Located as it is around some shimmering bodies of water, the city also has a good water transportation network. Take a motor boat or a traditional dragon boat and enjoy a scenic journey from A to B.
The city is served by Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN). This airport is located just 6.2 miles (10 km) from the centre of Xiamen. There are a number of public bus routes running from the airport to the city centre. The bus services tend to stop just after 10pm, but one or two operate until around midnight: just check the timetables before your trip. Taxis and hire cars are also on hand outside the airport to take you to your hotel.
Travellers will need to book flights to Gaoqi Intl (XMN) if they wish to fly to Xiamen. The Xiamen airport is 8.5 km from the city centre.
