Salou is the biggest resort destination along the southern Golden Coast of Spain, but it does not have its own airport. There are three airports within 100 miles of the popular seaside resort city for travel to and from the United Kingdom.
The nearest airport is Reus, which is a regional airport but does get regular international flights, including flights originating out of UK cities. Reus is just 6.4 miles from Salou; it takes about 10 minutes to get from Reus Airport to Salou.
Flight options out of the UK to Reus were greatly expanded in 2019; destination cities include London, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Belfast, Cardiff, Doncaster, Glasgow, Leeds, and Liverpool.
Barcelona is home to the second closest airport; Barcelona-El Prat Airport is 61.1 miles away from Salou. It takes about an hour by car or bus to get from Barcelona to Salou. Flights into Barcelona from the UK are generally more plentiful; stopovers in the city can become mini-vacations for travelers, especially overnight and one-day stopovers.
The third airport is Lleida-Alguaire; this is the furthest from Salou and takes approximately 90 minutes by car. Most cities that fly to Reus and Barcelona offer flights to Lleida-Alguaire.
Average flight times vary depending upon the destination city. Flights out of London average around 2h; flights from Edinburgh take around 5 hours with one connecting flight. Bristol takes substantially longer, averaging nearly 20h with multiple connecting flights. Glasgow flight lengths are similar, averaging around 17h but often require just one connecting flight.
The shortest travel times to Salou are always going to be flights to Reus Airport. Direct flights are available from London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. Airlines offering direct flights include Ryanair, Jet2 and Thomas Cook Airlines.
Direct flights to Barcelona are offered out of London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Liverpool via Ryanair, Vueling, and Easyjet.
Travelers seeking direct flights to Lleida-Alguaire Airport can find nonstop flights out of London and Manchester, offered by Norwegian Air Shuttle and Thomas Cook Airlines.
As Reus Airport is so close to Salut, the fastest way is by car or taxi; car rentals are available at the airport, as well as buses.
From Barcelona International, travelers can also opt for rental cars or buses, as well as from Lleida-Alguaire. There are no train options available from any airport within the region.
Salou is home to beautiful beaches, majestic fountains, a stunning city promenade, multiple water amusement parks, shopping, nightlife and more.
Popular beaches include Salou’s main city beach, Llevant, and Capellans; just to the east are five lesser-known, more private beaches accessible by car, including Cala de la Vinaya, Cala els Crancs, Cala Morisca, Cala de la Font and Cala de la Penya Tallada.
The major waterparks include PortAventura World, Spain’s most popular theme park, with five themed areas, dozens of rides, including rollercoasters and water slides, live shows, playgrounds, and a special Sesame Street-themed area. The city’s other water park, Portaventura Carbe Aquatic Park, is also huge, spanning over 34,00 square meters, packed with pools, plunges, and slides, as well as an indoor section ideal for younger visitors.
Salou’s best shopping, restaurants, and cafes can be found along the Avenida Jaume I promenade, featuring stunning marble and metal sculptures and palm-tree-lined walkways.
British citizens need only a passport to fly into and travel throughout Spain. Non-EU citizens require passports and can stay for up to 90 days.
