When is the best/cheapest time to visit the Valley?
High season in Anguilla and therefore the Valley runs from December through April, which is when the cost of flights and hotel prices will be highest. If you want to save money on your visit to The Valley your best bet is to travel during low or off-season, which is May through August.
Shoulder season, which is usually considered September and November, can also net deals. Just note that some hotels and restaurants close during low and shoulder season so do some research in advance of booking so you’re not disappointed to find out somewhere you wanted to visit or stay is not operational.
Why visit the Valley
The Valley is the capital of Anguilla and the largest of its districts. Going there will put you in close proximity to some of the best and most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean – if not the world. Think white, powder-soft sand and remarkably blue water that is impossible not to want to dive into immediately. The Valley itself is the administrative hub of the island and where you can get some souvenir shopping done. There are also some artist studios worth checking out such as Cheddie’s Carving Studio, and Savannah Art Gallery, colonial architecture to snap a few photos of, and add a visit to Wallblake House to your itinerary. Wallblake House, built in 1787, is the only surviving plantation house in Anguilla.
But if you’re in Anguilla you’ll likely be spending most of your time on one of the island’s breathtaking white sand beaches, which is also where the major hotels are. Shoal Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Maundays Bay are particularly beautiful. There are also some good restaurants in the Valley (and all over the island. Da’Vida in particular is worth a stop.
If you’re planning to stay put on the beach for the majority of your holiday and are staying at a full-service hotel or resort, you really don’t need to worry about transportation. Otherwise, getting around will require either a taxi or car rental. If you do rent a car keep in mind that you’ll be driving on the left. There is no public transportation on the island. Taxis can get expensive, but make sense if you aren’t comfortable driving in a new place.
Getting from the Airport to The Valley
The best way to get from the Clayton J. Llyod International Airport (AXA) to The Valley is to take a taxi or rent a car. Some hotels offer airport transfers so check with where you’re staying. It’s also important to note that in order to get to Anguilla you will be coming via another Caribbean island (often St. Maarten or San Juan). From there you can take a smaller flight, or a ferry depending on where you fly into. If you come by ferry, you can take a taxi to the Valley or to your hotel.
