Salamanca overview

Salamanca is the capital of the province of Salamanca, in the Castile and Leon region in Western Spain. This is where the purest form of Spanish is spoken, and for this reason, thousands of students travel to Salamanca each year to learn the wonderful language.

The heart of Salamanca is the Plaza Mayor, which many believe is one of the most beautiful squares in Spain. Plaza Mayor is filled with cafes, restaurants and boutiques for tourists and locals to explore. People also go to Plaza Mayor just to sit and relax while listening to musical groups, called “Tunas,” play in the square.

Salamanca experiences a Mediterranean climate with chilly temperatures November to March and warmer temperatures from April to September.

When to fly to Salamanca

Most people seek flights to Salamanca from May to September, but its popularity as a place of learning means that the city is popular year-round.

Peak Season: 
Late-April to late-September is peak season, this is when most people travel to Salamanca to take advantage of the warm weather. March and October are also good times to visit, as temperatures are cooler.

Off Season:
November to March tend to be cooler, with temperatures dropping to about 6 C (42 F).

Getting around Salamanca

Salamanca is a great city for walking, as most of the monuments and places of interest are grouped close together.

Public transportation is good. City buses connect the city with the outlying areas from early morning (7:15am) to late at night (11:45pm). There's also the “N” night bus service that runs between midnight and 3am (4am on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and public holidays).

Taxis are available 24 hours a day either by flagging one down in the street, at a taxi stand or by calling a taxi service.

Salamanca insider information

  • Casa de las Conchas, the house of shells, is a beautiful building with its outside walls lined with sculptures of scallop shells. Originally it was the palace of Rodrigo Maldonado, a knight of the Santiago Order, but it now houses Salamanca public library and information office.
  • Salamanca has two magnificent cathedrals; the New Cathedral and the Old Cathedral. These two cathedrals are joined together by a bell tower, offering amazing views from high up inside and from the roof of the Old Cathedral's smaller tower.
